The District's water meters are coming to the end of their useful life. Our meters utilize mobile read technology so that a staff member can drive by with antennas and record monthly meter reads. The current meters were installed around 2007 or 2008 and rely on an integrated battery which had an estimated life of 10-15 years.

The District has been replacing meters since 2022 with in house staff. Recently, a subcontractor has been hired to help catch up with a backlog of meters whose batteries are close to failing. 

There is no cost to the customer for this meter change out. This is a normal part of the District's meter life cycle. Some of our meters are in pits out in the yard and some of our meters are in a crawlspace or basement. Meters in pits are being replaced first because they seem to be failing first.

For meters in pits, new lids are being installed at the same time. The new lids have a recessed hole that the meter's transmitter can be mounted through. This makes the monthly meter reading easier since the transmitter signal is not restricted by the lid. These new lids are also cast iron, instead of aluminum. This makes them more durable and locatable with a metal detector, unlike the aluminum ones. Depending on the condition of the current pit walls, sometimes an entire new pit is being installed.

Since meters in pits are accessible, District staff and subcontractors are just knocking on doors to alert customers about the replacements as they occur. For meters that are in basements or crawlspaces, the District will make contact to arrange an appointment to enter the home and make the swap.
